To your last sentence, what if we were to add just England? As you stated Northern Ireland and Wales are likely bringing down the overall UK PPP.

One hypothetical that would be hard to parse out is the economic effect of joining the US. At the very least American tourism dollars would go up (enough to offset decreased EU tourism, perhaps); there are all sorts of other implications that may or may not be a net benefit. It's one thing to start at the bottom of the list, but I wonder how they would stack up after 10 years or 50 years.

I like the idea of just taking London. Who doesn't love a city-state that is itself a state. I don't want to keep the 50 states, however, so I also propose Rhode Island and Connecticut merge to become Con Island.
